In a landmark achievement for India’s clean energy sector, SJVN’s Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) has crossed the 150 billion units (BU) cumulative power generation milestone. The announcement was made in the presence of Sh. Bhupender Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director, SJVN, who congratulated the NJHPS team for this historic feat.
NJHPS, the nation’s largest underground hydro power station, continues to play a crucial role in strengthening the northern power grid, providing dependable green energy, and ensuring grid stability during peak demand periods.
The milestone was celebrated at the Power House with senior SJVN officials, including Sh. Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Personnel). Speaking at the event, Sh. Bhupender Gupta highlighted that since its commissioning in May 2004, NJHPS has demonstrated exceptional operational reliability. He cited several performance benchmarks: the station recorded its highest annual generation of 7,610.257 million units in FY 2011–12, a record monthly generation of 1,222.170 million units in July 2024, and its highest daily generation of 39.572 million units on 13 August 2024, reflecting its ability to optimally harness favorable hydrological conditions.
Sh. Ajay Kumar Sharma lauded the contributions of all present and past employees of NJHPS and emphasized the project’s role in spurring local development and economic growth. Sh. Rajeev Kapoor, Head of Project, NJHPS, expressed gratitude to the SJVN management, the Ministry of Power, the Government of Himachal Pradesh, stakeholders, employees, contractors, and the local community for their unwavering support in achieving this milestone.
The 150 BU achievement holds significant environmental value, as it represents the displacement of substantial fossil-fuel-based generation and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, reinforcing NJHPS’s importance in India’s clean energy transition and climate commitments.
Operated by SJVN, NJHPS continues to benefit from systematic modernization, digital monitoring, and rigorous maintenance practices. Beyond energy generation, the project has contributed to regional socio-economic development through employment opportunities and infrastructure growth.
As India expands its renewable energy portfolio, the success of NJHPS stands as a testament to engineering excellence and the strategic importance of hydropower in meeting the nation’s sustainable energy goals.
