Coal India and Damodar Valley Corporation sign joint venture agreement to set up a 1,600 MW coal-based power expansion at Chandrapura Thermal Power Station in Jharkhand.

In a major boost to India’s thermal power capacity, Coal India Limited (CIL) and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) have inked a joint venture agreement to develop a 1,600 MW coal-based power expansion at the Chandrapura Thermal Power Station located in Jharkhand.

The new expansion project, planned as two units of 800 MW each, aims to strengthen power availability across eastern India while leveraging CIL’s assured coal supply and DVC’s operational expertise in thermal generation. The venture marks one of the most significant collaborations between two major public sector entities in recent years.

According to officials, the project will incorporate modern, high-efficiency technologies to improve performance and reduce emissions compared to older coal-based units. The expansion is expected to support rising electricity demand in industrial and urban regions, as well as contribute to grid stability as renewable integration increases across the country.

The JV will oversee project financing, construction, and operation, with detailed timelines to be finalized shortly. Both organisations have emphasized that the project aligns with India’s strategy of balancing energy security with the need for reliable baseload power.

With this new partnership, Chandrapura is set to emerge as a key power generation hub, reinforcing the energy infrastructure of Jharkhand, West Bengal, and adjoining states.
