11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting to Focus on Energy Security, Innovation and Sustainable Development

India will host the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting on 25–26 June 2026 in Gurugram, Haryana, under its BRICS Chairship 2026. The meeting will bring together Energy Ministers and senior officials from all BRICS member countries to strengthen cooperation on energy security, sustainability, and innovation. This marks India’s fourth BRICS Chairship, following its previous tenures in 2012, 2016, and 2021.

India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 is guided by the overarching theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability (BRICS).” Under the Energy Track, India has adopted the theme “सर्वेषां ऊर्जम्” (Energy for All), reflecting the collective commitment of BRICS nations to ensuring universal access to energy. BRICS currently comprises 11 countries — Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates — accounting for nearly half of the world’s population and around 40 per cent of global GDP.

The ministerial meeting comes at a critical time when countries worldwide are striving to balance energy security, affordability, and sustainability while addressing climate change, technological transformation, and rising energy demand. The priorities of the BRICS Energy Agenda closely align with India’s sustainable development pathway, which focuses on meeting growing energy needs while enhancing energy security and access, strengthening grid resilience, diversifying supply sources, and expanding the share of clean energy in the overall energy mix.

As Chair, India has structured the BRICS Energy Agenda around three key priorities: Energy Security and Sustainability; Energy Access and Equity; and Technology and Innovation. Through these focus areas, India aims to encourage practical cooperation among BRICS nations and advance collective action on energy-related challenges.

The meeting will also provide India with an opportunity to showcase its progress in developing a sustainable and future-ready energy ecosystem. As the world’s third-largest producer and consumer of electricity and one of the fastest-growing major economies, India considers secure, affordable, and sustainable energy central to its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

Over the past decade, India has expanded its solar power capacity by more than 50 times, deployed over 60 million smart meters, and set a target of achieving 410 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2032. The country has also implemented significant reforms to strengthen its power transmission and distribution infrastructure. These include expanding the national transmission network to support large-scale renewable energy integration, accelerating the development of Green Energy Corridors, implementing the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), and promoting regional grid connectivity through initiatives such as One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG).

India has also recorded notable progress in the biofuels sector, including achieving 20 per cent ethanol blending and introducing E85 fuel, a high-ethanol blend containing 80–85 per cent ethanol. These initiatives support the country’s efforts to diversify its energy mix, strengthen energy security, and reduce emissions.

At the international level, India has emerged as a strong advocate for clean energy collaboration through initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Global Biofuels Alliance, reinforcing its commitment to advancing an inclusive and sustainable global energy future.

During its Chairship, India will seek to advance the priorities of the Global South while promoting cooperation on energy security, resilient supply chains, innovation, and sustainable development. In an increasingly uncertain global energy landscape, enhanced cooperation among BRICS nations is expected to play a significant role in addressing shared energy challenges.

To support discussions under the BRICS Energy Track, three virtual meetings of Senior Energy Officials have already been conducted to develop recommendations for ministerial consideration. In addition, two virtual seminars were organised on the themes “Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Energy Sector” and “Advancements in Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Technologies,” with active participation from BRICS member countries. These engagements have contributed to building consensus on key priorities and identifying opportunities for deeper collaboration.

The scheduled programme leading up to and following the ministerial meeting includes the Fourth Meeting of the BRICS Committee of Senior Energy Officials from 22–24 June 2026 in Gurugram, side events focusing on Clean Coal Technologies and Raising Electrical Appliance Standards, the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting on 25–26 June 2026, and the BRICS Youth Energy Summit, which will be held virtually on 17–18 August 2026.

The 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting is expected to further strengthen cooperation among member countries on energy security, innovation, and sustainable development. The gathering will serve as an important platform for advancing practical collaboration toward secure, affordable, sustainable, and future-ready energy systems while enabling India to promote the priorities of the Global South and contribute to shaping a more inclusive global energy future.
