Bondada Engineering Secures GIPCL LOI for 20 MW/120 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Storage Project

Bondada Engineering Limited has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL) to develop a 20 MW/120 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) at GIPCL’s 165 MW natural gas power plant complex in Vadodara, Gujarat. The project also includes a 10-year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract.

According to the company, the project is India’s largest grid-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System. The development marks a significant step in the Hyderabad-based engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company’s expansion into advanced energy storage technologies and strengthens its presence in the battery energy storage sector.

The scope of work covers the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the 120 MWh VRFB-based energy storage system, along with its operation and maintenance for 10 years. The project is scheduled to be completed within 18 months from the receipt of the Notice of Award (NOA).

Dr. Bondada Raghavendra Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of Bondada Engineering Limited, said, “This project marks an important step in our expansion into advanced energy storage solutions. As India increases its renewable energy capacity, energy storage will play a key role in ensuring reliable and efficient power supply. We are pleased to work with GIPCL on this project and look forward to strengthening our capabilities in long-duration energy storage while contributing to India’s clean energy goals.”

Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology is gaining attention for its potential in long-duration energy storage, enabling energy to be stored and discharged over extended periods. The Government of India has set a target of deploying approximately 236 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030, underscoring the scale of infrastructure development required to support the country’s energy transition.

The GIPCL project complements Bondada Engineering’s existing renewable energy EPC portfolio and aligns with its strategy to expand into emerging infrastructure segments. The company operates across renewable energy, telecommunications infrastructure and other EPC sectors, with a focus on participating in the development of next-generation energy infrastructure.

Bondada Engineering is also building on its experience with a 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System project for NTPC Renewable Energy at Khavda, Gujarat. The new 20 MW/120 MWh project for GIPCL further expands the company’s involvement in long-duration energy storage.

Through these projects, Bondada Engineering aims to strengthen its capabilities in advanced energy storage technologies and contribute to the development of a more reliable, sustainable and resilient power ecosystem in India.
