ABB Completes Acquisition of Specialtrasfo to Strengthen Specialized Transformer Portfolio for Industrial Applications

ABB has completed the acquisition of Specialtrasfo S.p.A., an Italy-based manufacturer of specialized medium-voltage transformers, including converter and rectifier transformers. The acquisition encompasses three production facilities in Italy and a workforce of more than 130 employees. In 2025, Specialtrasfo recorded revenues of approximately €80 million, with ABB accounting for nearly half of the company’s business through its integrated offering. The transaction was initially announced on May 12, 2026, while the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

The acquisition comes amid rising global electricity demand, which is driving increased requirements for transformers—an essential component in industrial power conversion systems. By integrating Specialtrasfo into its operations, ABB expands its existing portfolio with specialized converter and rectifier transformer solutions, while ensuring that Specialtrasfo continues to serve its established customer base as a transformer supplier.

The move is expected to strengthen ABB’s supply chain resilience and enhance its ability to meet customer requirements across a diverse range of industries, including energy, metals, mining, industrial processing, and offshore applications.

Commenting on the development, Joerg Stutz, Business Line Manager, High Power Solutions, ABB, said, “The global energy transition requires proven, scalable and reliable solutions. By combining the expertise of Specialtrasfo in specialized transformers with that of ABB’s leadership in electric drives and motors, our customers are supported through the entire life-cycle as we provide a single, accountable partner for the design and supply of key components and solutions into critical applications.”

According to ABB, the combined capabilities of both companies will enable the delivery of a more comprehensive and integrated offering for critical motoric and non-motoric industrial applications. The expanded portfolio includes medium-voltage transformers, medium- and low-voltage variable speed drives, high-speed and slow-speed synchronous motors and generators, switchgear, and customized e-house solutions.

The acquisition further reinforces ABB’s position in the industrial electrification and power conversion market, supporting customers with end-to-end solutions designed to address evolving energy and industrial requirements.
