India Crosses 300 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Power Capacity

India has crossed the 300 GW milestone in non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity, reaching 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026, marking a significant step in the country’s clean energy transition and climate action efforts. The achievement represents more than 60% of the 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target set for 2030.

As of July 31, 2026, India’s non-fossil fuel-based installed capacity comprises 164.59 GW of solar power, 58.14 GW of wind power, 57.24 GW of hydro power, including large and small hydro, 11.75 GW of bio-power, and 8.78 GW of nuclear power, taking the total non-fossil fuel capacity to 300.50 GW.

The share of non-fossil fuel-based capacity in India’s total installed electricity generation capacity, which currently stands at around 552 GW, has increased to more than 54%.

The milestone has been supported by policy measures introduced by the Government to accelerate the country’s clean energy transition. The growth reflects India’s progress towards building an Aatmanirbhar energy ecosystem and achieving its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Solar power has emerged as the key driver of India’s clean energy capacity expansion. Solar installed capacity has increased to around 165 GW, compared with just 2.8 GW in 2014. During the same period, wind power capacity has grown from 21 GW in 2014 to more than 58 GW.

India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity during 2025-26. Solar power accounted for 44.6 GW of the additions, while wind power contributed 6 GW during the year.

The expansion of renewable energy capacity has also been accompanied by a substantial increase in renewable electricity generation. Renewable energy generation in India increased from 190.96 billion units (BU) in 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in 2025-26, reflecting the growing contribution of renewable sources to the country’s electricity supply.

Alongside capacity expansion, India has also strengthened its domestic manufacturing capabilities to support the growth of renewable energy and reduce dependence on external supply chains. Under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which focuses on supporting solar installations through high-efficiency, indigenously produced modules, the capacity enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for Solar PV Modules has crossed the 200 GW mark, compared with just 2.3 GW in 2014.

The expansion of clean energy is increasingly becoming a key component of India’s industrial competitiveness, energy independence and economic resilience, alongside its role in meeting climate commitments.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is also advancing industrial decarbonisation through the implementation of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The initiative aims to position India as a global hub for the production, use and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives, further supporting the country’s broader clean energy transition.
