The Kakrapar Atomic Power Station Unit-2 (KAPS-2) in Gujarat has completed 365 consecutive days of uninterrupted operation, marking a significant operational milestone for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL). The 220 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) achieved the feat on July 21, underscoring the station’s reliability and operational efficiency.
During the one-year continuous run, KAPS-2 generated around 1,950 million units (MUs) of electricity, contributing to the country’s clean energy supply while maintaining high standards of safety and performance. The achievement reflects sustained improvements in plant operations, maintenance practices and equipment reliability across NPCIL’s nuclear fleet.
NPCIL described the accomplishment as another important benchmark for India’s nuclear power programme, highlighting the consistent performance of indigenous PHWR technology. The utility noted that long uninterrupted operating cycles improve plant availability, optimise fuel utilisation and enhance overall generation efficiency.
Located in Gujarat’s Surat district, Kakrapar Atomic Power Station is one of India’s key nuclear generating sites, housing both 220 MW and 700 MW PHWR units. The latest milestone further strengthens NPCIL’s efforts to increase the contribution of nuclear energy to India’s growing electricity demand while supporting the country’s low-carbon energy transition.
