Collaboration framework between the Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC), Canada and Oil India Limited (OIL)

A significant collaboration framework has been signed between the Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC), Canada, and Oil India Limited (OIL), India, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in advanced energy transition technologies, with a focus on sustainability, carbon management, and clean energy innovation. The agreement was formalized on 10 June 2026 in Calgary on the sidelines of the Global Energy Show 2026.

The collaboration aims to enhance India–Canada energy relations while addressing global climate and sustainability challenges. It brings together institutional expertise in carbon capture, geothermal energy, subsurface technologies, and startup-driven innovation ecosystems.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Premier of Saskatchewan Hon’ble Scott Moe, the High Commissioner of India to Canada, the Chief Executive Officer of PTRC, the Chairman and Managing Director of OIL, along with senior officials from both sides.

Under the framework, PTRC and OIL will jointly explore and develop cooperation across multiple strategic areas. These include carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), including permanent geological sequestration and mineralization; innovative enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques designed to reduce environmental impact and energy consumption; and identification of mutually beneficial geothermal energy projects.

The partnership also focuses on collaborative research through PTRC’s Energy Innovation Hub and OIL’s technical ecosystem in subsurface energy production and storage. In addition, both institutions will leverage their respective networks to identify commercial opportunities in India and Canada, supporting energy innovation and business development.

A key component of the agreement is cooperation in clean technology research and engagement with mc2+, a startup-focused platform established under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. This initiative is expected to accelerate innovation-driven solutions and strengthen startup participation in the energy transition landscape.

Overall, the partnership marks a strategic step toward deepening international cooperation in clean energy research and advancing technologies critical to achieving long-term sustainability and energy security goals in both countries.
