GERC Retains Power Tariffs for FY 2026–27, Expands Smart Meter Incentives

The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) has decided to retain electricity tariff rates for FY 2026–27, maintaining the existing base tariffs for consumers while introducing measures to promote efficient energy consumption. The revised tariffs, finalised after the truing up of FY 2024–25 accounts and determination of the Aggregate Revenue Requirement (ARR), will come into effect from April 1.

The decision ensures that consumers of Torrent Power as well as state-owned discoms in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Surat will not face any increase in base tariff rates. However, the commission has implemented a series of policy adjustments aimed at encouraging smarter electricity usage patterns.

As part of these measures, the rebate on prepaid smart meters has been increased from 2 per cent to 3 per cent. In a significant policy shift, Time-of-Use (ToU) discounts have now been extended to postpaid smart meter consumers across residential, commercial, and EV charging categories, removing the earlier limitation that restricted these benefits to prepaid users.

The ToU discount window has also been expanded from four hours to six hours, now spanning 11 am to 5 pm. This change aligns with the increased availability of lower-cost solar power during daytime hours. Additionally, the scope of these discounts has been broadened to include all waterworks connections, with previous load-related restrictions eased.

For consumers of Torrent Power, the regulator has replaced the earlier night-time concession with a ‘solar hours rebate’, offering a benefit of 30 paise per unit for electricity consumed between 11 am and 3 pm. This move underscores a strategic push to incentivise electricity usage during daylight hours.

Further revisions include updated ToU charge time slots for Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Surat, with peak tariffs now applicable from 6 am to 8 am and from 5 pm to 11 pm. The commission has also reduced the additional tariff for opting for green power from Re 0.90 per unit to Re 0.75 per unit.
