Rajasthan has achieved a landmark in India’s renewable energy transition by securing the lowest-ever tariff for large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). According to recent auction results, the state discovered a rate of ₹1.775 lakh per MW per month, a benchmark for long-duration energy storage in the country.
The auction, carried out by Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) through a tariff-based competitive bidding process, targeted a 1 GW / 2 GWh standalone BESS capacity. Eleven companies emerged as winners, with several quoting the record-low tariff.
This pricing milestone comes amidst strong investor interest and reflects Rajasthan’s ongoing push to integrate storage with its abundant renewable energy capacity. Analysts say such low-cost storage could pave the way for more affordable, round-the-clock clean power in the state.
Rajasthan officials have framed the achievement as a result of the state’s enabling policy environment, investor-friendly approach, and support through central schemes like Viability Gap Funding (VGF).
With this auction success, Rajasthan strengthens its position as a national leader in both solar generation and energy storage, signaling its commitment to a future powered by sustainable, reliable clean energy.
