The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has estimated India’s onshore wind energy potential at approximately 1,210 GW at a hub height of 150 metres and 2,934 GW at 200 metres.
Its latest assessment also places offshore wind potential at around 220 GW and 277 GW, respectively, at the two heights.
The study identifies Rajasthan, Gujarat and Karnataka as major onshore wind resource regions.
India’s installed wind capacity stood at 59.20 GW as of 30 September 2026, following record additions of around 6.05 GW in FY2025-26.
The assessment points to significant long-term opportunities for the electrical industry.
Harnessing this potential will require investments in transmission networks, substations, power evacuation systems, cables, grid flexibility and supporting electrical equipment.
