IEX Expands Energy Markets Footprint: Subsidiary Indian Coal Exchange Ltd Applies for Licence with Coal Controller Organisation

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), India’s premier electricity exchange, today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Indian Coal Exchange Limited, has applied for a licence with the Coal Controller Organisation (CCO), the regulatory authority for coal exchanges.

IEX incorporated Indian Coal Exchange Limited on June 1, 2026, with an authorised share capital of Rs 100 crore.

The Indian Coal Exchange will operate as a physical delivery-based coal trading exchange. It will offer an organised, transparent and technology-enabled marketplace for coal trading, in accordance with the Coal Exchange Rules, 2026. By bringing buyers and sellers together on a single, neutral platform, the exchange will facilitate trades at designated delivery points, enabling efficient price discovery and wider market access.

Drawing on IEX’s 18 years of experience in building transparent, technology-driven and market-based trading platforms, the Indian Coal Exchange will mark the Group’s entry into the coal market.

The new venture will complement IEX’s electricity market business, the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX), India’s leading natural gas trading platform, and IEX’s role in facilitating I-REC issuance in India. With this addition, the Indian Coal Exchange will further broaden the Group’s energy market offerings across the energy value chain.
