Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, led the Indian delegation to the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2026, held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore from 26 to 28 October 2026. During the three-day visit, India highlighted its progress in the power and renewable energy sectors and explored opportunities to strengthen energy cooperation with Singapore and other international partners.
Addressing sessions on the first two days of the event, Shri Naik highlighted India’s growing non-fossil electricity generation capacity, which reached 308 GW, accounting for approximately 55 per cent of the country’s total installed electricity capacity of 558.9 GW as of 30 September 2026.
He noted that India had achieved 50 per cent non-fossil installed capacity in June 2025, five years ahead of its 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target. The country is now working towards achieving 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030.
Highlighting the progress of major government initiatives, Shri Naik stated that approximately 53 lakh rooftop solar systems had been installed under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, benefiting around 63 lakh households.
Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, nearly 12 lakh standalone solar pumps had been installed, while more than 17 lakh grid-connected agricultural pumps had been solarised. Together, these initiatives have added approximately 16.7 GW of decentralised renewable energy capacity and benefited around 30 lakh farmers.
SIEW 2026 coincided with the 25th anniversary of Singapore’s Energy Market Authority. The summit was expanded into a two-day programme this year, featuring the Singapore-IEA Forum, Singapore-IRENA Forum and IAEA at SIEW. Shri Naik delivered a keynote address on the first day and presented the opening remarks on the second day.
Bilateral Discussions with Singapore and Bhutan
On the sidelines of the summit, Shri Naik held bilateral discussions with representatives from Singapore, Bhutan and international energy organisations to advance cooperation across the power and renewable energy sectors.
During his meeting with Ms Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Energy and Trade and Industry of Singapore, both sides discussed energy cooperation under the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including the proposed cross-border electricity interconnection between the two countries.
Shri Naik invited long-term investments from Singapore in India’s transmission infrastructure, pumped storage projects, battery energy storage systems and renewable energy sector. The discussions also covered cooperation in green hydrogen and ammonia, energy efficiency, and partnerships between Indian power equipment manufacturers and Singaporean utilities.
In his meeting with H.E. Lyonpo Sonam Tashi, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources of the Royal Government of Bhutan, Shri Naik congratulated him on assuming office. The two Ministers reviewed progress on the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project, noting that dam construction activities had progressed steadily since concreting resumed in April 2026. They also acknowledged the satisfactory operation of the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II project.
The discussions further covered other hydropower projects under consideration in partnership with Indian entities and cross-border transmission planning up to 2040.
Engagements with IRENA and IEA
Shri Naik also met Mr Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and appreciated the organisation’s role in facilitating international cooperation in renewable energy.
The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration under the Strategic Partnership Agreement signed between the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and IRENA in January 2022. Key areas included affordable renewable energy financing for developing economies, long-term energy planning, green hydrogen and capacity building, particularly in the ASEAN region.
In a separate meeting with Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Shri Naik welcomed the forthcoming launch of the IEA’s India Renewable Energy Market Report 2026 at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and the India Critical Minerals Report at India Mining Week.
Visits to Energy Storage and Waste-to-Energy Facilities
On the third day of his visit, Shri Naik toured Sembcorp’s 326 MWh Battery Energy Storage System facility on Jurong Island. The installation comprises 800 large-scale lithium-ion phosphate batteries and is the largest utility-scale battery energy storage system in Singapore and Southeast Asia.
The Minister’s visit concluded with a tour of Keppel’s 800 TPD, 22 MW Waste-to-Energy Plant in the Tuas region.
The visit provided a platform for India to showcase its achievements in the power and renewable energy sectors while strengthening bilateral and multilateral engagement with Singapore, Bhutan and international energy organisations. The discussions and facility visits also offered opportunities to advance cooperation in renewable energy, energy storage, power transmission, green hydrogen and sustainable energy infrastructure.
