The Delhi Government is set to introduce 50 electric ‘Ladies Special’ buses on some of the capital’s busiest commuter corridors as part of its efforts to enhance safe, comfortable and sustainable public transport for women. The new fleet will primarily operate on high-demand routes connecting Central Delhi, ITO and other key commercial and institutional hubs, where a large number of women commuters travel daily.
The air-conditioned electric buses will be reserved exclusively for women passengers and are expected to offer improved safety, reduced waiting time and a more convenient travel experience during peak hours. The initiative is part of the Delhi Government’s broader strategy to strengthen women-centric public transport services while accelerating the transition towards an all-electric bus fleet.
According to government officials, the selected routes witness heavy daily passenger traffic from office-goers, students and working professionals. The deployment of dedicated electric buses is aimed at addressing overcrowding on existing services while encouraging greater use of public transport among women. Authorities are also planning route optimisation based on passenger demand to maximise the effectiveness of the new services.
The initiative complements Delhi’s ongoing expansion of its electric bus network. The government has already announced plans to induct thousands of additional electric buses in phases to improve last-mile connectivity, reduce vehicular emissions and modernise the capital’s public transport system. The new ladies special buses will be equipped with modern passenger amenities and are expected to incorporate safety features such as GPS-based tracking, CCTV surveillance and panic buttons.
Officials said the deployment of the 50 electric buses reflects the government’s dual focus on promoting clean mobility and ensuring safer public transportation for women. The initiative is expected to contribute to lower carbon emissions while providing a dedicated and reliable commuting option on some of Delhi’s busiest travel corridors.
