Ministry of Coal to Launch 15th Round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions, Host Stakeholder Consultation in Mumbai on April 17

The Ministry of Coal will launch the 15th round of commercial coal mine auctions on April 17, 2026, alongside a stakeholder consultation on “Atmanirbhar Bharat: Coal for Energy Security” in Mumbai. The event will be attended by Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary, Ministry of Coal, as the Chief Guest, underscoring the government’s continued focus on strengthening energy security and self-reliance.

The upcoming auction round marks another step in the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance domestic coal production and reduce import dependence. Since the introduction of commercial coal mining in 2020 under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the initiative has played a pivotal role in improving coal availability and reinforcing India’s energy framework.

The 15th round will offer a new set of fully explored and partially explored coal blocks under liberalised terms aimed at improving ease of doing business. The Ministry is targeting broad-based participation, inviting established mining players, new entrants, and technology-driven companies to compete, thereby fostering a more dynamic and competitive coal ecosystem.

The commercial coal auction regime has brought structural reforms to the sector by enhancing transparency, promoting fair competition, and ensuring a level playing field. These measures have contributed to increased domestic coal supply, supporting key industries while reducing reliance on imports in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

With commercial mining emerging as a key driver of economic growth, the Ministry expects the upcoming auction round to further boost investments, generate employment, and accelerate sectoral expansion. The initiative is also aimed at ensuring a stable and reliable coal supply for industries nationwide.

The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to delivering affordable and dependable energy while advancing sustainable growth, innovation, and long-term resilience in India’s coal sector.
