Chennai Launches Premium Electric AC Bus Service to Upgrade Public Transport

Chennai has introduced a premium electric air-conditioned bus service aimed at improving commuter comfort and modernising the city’s public transport system. The new service has been launched by the city’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) and is designed to offer a more comfortable and reliable travel experience for daily passengers.

The low-floor electric buses are equipped with several advanced features including cushioned seating, Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile charging ports, CCTV surveillance, GPS tracking and emergency safety systems. One of the key highlights of the service is a “guaranteed seating” policy, ensuring that passengers do not have to travel standing during the journey.

Unlike conventional city buses, the premium service operates with digital ticketing and seat reservation through a mobile application, enabling commuters to book seats in advance and avoid overcrowding.

In the initial phase, the buses are being deployed on routes connecting major residential areas and IT corridors, including the busy Old Mahabalipuram Road stretch that hosts several technology parks and corporate offices.

The initiative is expected to encourage more commuters to shift from private vehicles to public transport while supporting the city’s broader goals of reducing traffic congestion, improving travel comfort and promoting cleaner electric mobility.
