KETRACO Commissions 132 kV Lessos–Kabarnet Transmission Line, Strengthening Kenya’s Power Grid

The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has commissioned the 132 kV Lessos–Kabarnet transmission line, marking an important milestone in strengthening electricity infrastructure in the country’s Rift Valley region.

The project was executed by KETRACO in partnership with China CAMC Engineering Company Limited, a subsidiary of the China National Machinery Industry Corporation. The commissioning ceremony took place at the Kabarnet substation in Baringo County.

The newly commissioned transmission line links several key load centres to Kenya’s national grid, including Rumuruti, Kabarnet, Narok, Sotik, Bomet, Mwingi, Kitui, Wote, Sultan Hamud, Ishiara and Kieni, spanning parts of Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.

The line is expected to play a critical role in evacuating geothermal power generated in the Central and North Rift regions, supporting Kenya’s growing renewable energy capacity. In addition to improving power evacuation, the project will help meet rising electricity demand, enhance grid stability, and reduce transmission constraints.

By improving supply reliability across multiple counties, the Lessos–Kabarnet line is also expected to support regional economic growth, industrial activity and improved access to electricity for communities along the corridor.
