India’s electronics manufacturing sector has recorded an exceptional rise over the past eleven years, with total production increasing sixfold to ₹11.32 lakh crore and exports expanding eightfold to ₹3.26 lakh crore, according to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The data was shared by Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitendra Singh in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Friday (5 December). He said the growth reflects the government’s focused policies under the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, which aim to strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce import dependence.

The minister highlighted that the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing, launched in 2020, has played a major role in accelerating domestic production, especially of mobile phones and key electronic components. The scheme has attracted investments worth ₹14,065 crore to date. He added that the separate PLI scheme for IT hardware, covering laptops, tablets, servers and ultra-small form factor devices, has also contributed to the sector’s expansion, bringing in ₹846 crore in investments.

Alongside the PLI schemes, the government has implemented a series of reforms in taxation, customs duties, foreign direct investment norms and ease-of-doing-business processes, which have collectively helped improve the overall manufacturing environment. As a result, India has emerged as a significant global hub for electronics production. Singh noted that mobile manufacturing, in particular, has seen dramatic growth, with the number of manufacturing units rising from just two in 2014 to over 300 today. Mobile phone output has also increased sharply from ₹2.2 lakh crore in 2020–21 to ₹5.5 lakh crore under the PLI regime.

The minister further pointed out that India’s electronics exports have grown from ₹38,000 crore in 2014–15 to ₹3.26 lakh crore in 2024–25, making electronics the country’s third-largest export category. He said the government remains committed to strengthening the domestic electronics ecosystem and building India’s position as a competitive global manufacturing destination.
