NPCIL, GSECL Sign MoU to Explore Sites for New Nuclear Power Projects in Gujarat

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore and identify suitable sites in Gujarat for setting up new Nuclear Power Projects (NPPs).

The MoU was signed on 1 October 2026 in the presence of Shri Rushikesh Patel, Hon’ble Minister of Energy & Petrochemicals, Panchayat & Rural Housing, Legislative & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Gujarat.

Shri Ashwini Kumar, Principal Secretary, Energy & Petrochemicals Department, Government of Gujarat and Chairman, GSECL, and Shri V. Rajesh, Chairman & Managing Director, NPCIL, signed the MoU on behalf of GSECL and NPCIL, respectively. The signing ceremony was also attended by Shri P.S. Karthigeyan, JS (Power & ER), DAE, along with senior officials from GSECL and NPCIL.

Under the MoU, the two organisations will collaborate on discussions, relevant information sharing, identification of potential sites and assessment of their technical suitability for nuclear power development.

The initiative is aimed at exploring Gujarat’s potential to contribute to India’s expanding nuclear energy programme and its long-term objective of ensuring reliable, clean and low-carbon electricity.

As India moves towards a stronger and more sustainable energy future, nuclear power is expected to play an important role in strengthening energy security and supporting the country’s clean energy transition.

The collaboration represents a joint effort by NPCIL and GSECL to explore new opportunities for nuclear power development and contribute to India’s vision of Viksit Bharat, energy security and sustainability, while supporting the national objective of achieving net zero by 2070.

The MoU marks a new possibility for Gujarat and another step forward in India’s nuclear energy journey.
