KPTCL Commissions 12-km 220 kV Multi-Circuit Transmission Line to Strengthen Bengaluru Grid

Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) has commissioned a 12-km-long 220 kV multi-circuit transmission line to strengthen Bengaluru’s transmission network and enhance the city’s grid capacity and operational reliability.

The project provides double LILO (Line-In Line-Out) connectivity to the existing 220 kV Hoody-Manyata Tech Park transmission lines from the cable terminating tower near the Bagalur Road crossing, KPTCL said in a statement.

The transmission infrastructure was developed in a densely populated urban environment, where space constraints, existing electrical networks, roads and other urban infrastructure posed significant technical and operational challenges.

“For this particular project, the local conditions, technical feasibility and operational requirements were comprehensively assessed before adopting an appropriate engineering design and execution methodology,” KPTCL said.

As part of the project, a portion of the available transmission alignment in the Vidyanagar area was technically utilised for constructing the 220 kV multi-circuit transmission line. The solution was designed specifically to meet the technical and site-specific requirements of the project.

The execution involved working amid existing power lines, road traffic, urban infrastructure and restricted working space. KPTCL said its engineers, technical personnel and project teams completed the work through meticulous planning, strict safety measures and close coordination among various divisions.

The newly commissioned transmission system is expected to strengthen Bengaluru’s grid capacity and operational reliability while improving the network’s ability to meet the city’s growing power demand.

Karnataka Energy Minister K J George said Bengaluru’s power demand is continuously increasing, requiring corresponding strengthening of transmission infrastructure. He noted that transmission projects in urban areas require solutions based on local conditions, technical feasibility and future system requirements.

“KPTCL has successfully addressed the challenges associated with this project through an appropriate engineering solution, and the successful completion of the project is commendable,” George said.

V Ram Prasath Manohar, Managing Director, KPTCL, said the project involved unique local conditions and technical requirements. Following a comprehensive assessment, the corporation adopted a technically feasible design and implementation methodology.

“Successfully commissioning the 12-km 220 kV multi-circuit transmission line amid existing electrical and urban infrastructure reflects the technical competence, coordination and commitment of our engineers and field teams,” Manohar said.
