The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) has notified the Grid Interactive Distributed Renewable Energy Sources Regulations, 2026, replacing the state’s 2016 rooftop solar net-metering framework.
The new regulations introduce five mechanisms for grid-connected renewable energy systems: net metering, net billing, gross metering, group net metering and virtual net metering. They allow installations of up to 4 MW AC under specified arrangements, subject to applicable technical and connectivity requirements.
An important provision concerns battery energy storage. Certain consumers with contracted demand exceeding 100 kW installing renewable energy capacity beyond their contracted demand will be required to provide battery storage with at least two hours of charging and discharging capability for 50% of the excess capacity.
The framework is significant for distribution utilities and electrical equipment manufacturers. It could support demand for smart meters, protection systems, distribution transformers, inverters, battery storage equipment and grid-monitoring technologies.
