India’s Electricity Consumption Rises 21.88% to 159.76 BU in October 2026

India’s electricity consumption increased 21.88% year-on-year to 159.76 billion units (BU) in October 2026, compared with 131.07 BU in the same month last year, reflecting stronger demand from commercial and industrial consumers.

The rise in consumption was largely driven by increased industrial and commercial activity during the festive season, along with continued use of cooling appliances in several parts of the country.

The country’s peak power demand also increased significantly to 260.73 GW in October, compared with 210.82 GW in October 2025. India’s record peak power demand stood at 270.82 GW in May 2026.

According to industry experts, electricity demand is expected to remain steady in November, supported by festive activities and above-normal temperatures across several regions.

The India Meteorological Department has also forecast above-normal maximum temperatures across most parts of the country during the month.

The sustained increase in electricity consumption highlights the growing requirement for reliable power generation and distribution infrastructure.

Rising demand is also expected to support investments in transmission networks, transformers, cables, substations and other electrical equipment required to strengthen the country’s power supply system.
