Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved a significant milestone by securing a record number of orders for coal-based power projects from both public and private utilities, underscoring its continued dominance in India’s power equipment and infrastructure sector.
The company’s latest wins reflect strong demand for conventional thermal power solutions even as the energy mix evolves. With India’s power requirements continuing to climb, BHEL’s deep engineering capability and extensive project execution experience have positioned it as the preferred supplier for major coal-fired power installations. This performance also builds on strong order inflows in recent years, during which BHEL recorded its highest ever annual order intake and expanded its overall order book significantly.”
At the BHEL Day celebrations held at the company’s Trichy complex, executives highlighted the importance of precision engineering, meticulous planning, and coordinated execution to meet the expectations of clients and sustain growth momentum. BHEL’s leadership emphasised that timely delivery, quality output, and operational efficiency remain central to the organisation’s strategy as it scales up project execution across the power sector.
The company has been winning large contracts for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of supercritical and high-efficiency coal-based thermal power plants. In recent months, BHEL has secured notable orders for projects in key states such as Odisha, Telangana, and Gujarat, covering equipment supply and turnkey execution of boilers, turbines, generators, and associated auxiliary systems. These orders often run into multiple thousands of crores and span capacities ranging from 800 MW units to multi-unit complexes, reinforcing BHEL’s capability to deliver complex power infrastructure.
The resurgence in coal power equipment orders comes amidst efforts by power utilities to augment firm generation capacity alongside growing renewable energy deployment. Coal-fired plants continue to play a key role in ensuring grid stability and meeting peak demand, prompting utilities to invest in state-of-the-art thermal technology with better operational efficiencies and emissions control features.
Alongside its thermal power portfolio, BHEL has also expanded into related segments such as emission control systems for coal plants, further broadening its market offering and reinforcing its leadership status.
With a strengthened order pipeline and robust manufacturing base spread across multiple facilities, BHEL enters the current financial year with strong execution prospects. The company’s strategic focus on indigenisation, technological innovation, and comprehensive project delivery is expected to further cement its role as a cornerstone of India’s power infrastructure ecosystem.
