
Dutch semiconductor equipment major ASML is set to support India’s efforts to manufacture semiconductors locally for automotive applications as the company expands its presence in the country.
ASML will support the establishment and ramp-up of Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat. The $11 billion facility is planned to manufacture chips for automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence and other applications for customers globally.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding in May 2026 under which ASML will deploy its lithography tools and solutions at the Dholera fab. The partnership also covers development of domestic talent, strengthening of supply-chain resilience and building research capabilities around semiconductor manufacturing.
Since the partnership was announced, ASML has established a legal entity in India and is setting up a customer support office. Speaking at SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, the company said it is also beginning work to develop a local supplier base and engage with potential Indian suppliers.
ASML Executive Vice President and Chief Strategic Sourcing & Procurement Officer Wayne Allan said India already has significant industrial capabilities, but suppliers will need to develop semiconductor-specific competencies in areas such as cleaning, coating, specifications and the tight tolerances required for chip manufacturing.
The Dholera facility is significant for India’s automotive sector as the country seeks to establish domestic wafer fabrication capabilities alongside its strengths in semiconductor design and its expanding assembly and testing ecosystem.
Tata Electronics has partnered with Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), providing access to process technologies spanning 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm and 110nm nodes. Tata Electronics has said the fab will manufacture products including power management ICs, display drivers, microcontrollers and high-performance computing logic for automotive, computing, communications and AI applications.
The plant is planned to have a manufacturing capacity of up to 50,000 wafers per month. The 28nm technology is particularly relevant to automotive, mobile and AI chip applications targeted by the facility.
Lithography is a critical stage in semiconductor manufacturing, allowing chipmakers to print circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. ASML supplies the equipment, software and services used for this process rather than manufacturing semiconductors itself.
For the Dholera facility, ASML will provide its lithography systems and related solutions to support installation, process optimisation and the eventual manufacturing ramp-up. The company is also working with Tata Electronics on talent development, supply-chain initiatives and research infrastructure.
ASML is showcasing lithography systems alongside computational lithography software, metrology and inspection solutions at SEMICON India 2026. The company said this integrated portfolio can support semiconductor manufacturers from system installation and process optimisation through high-volume production and ongoing fab operations.
The company’s involvement comes as India develops its domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, with the Dholera facility positioned as the country’s first commercial 300 mm semiconductor fab. ASML’s expanding local presence is expected to cover customer support, logistics and engagement with Indian suppliers as the manufacturing ecosystem develops.
The partnership between ASML and Tata Electronics brings a major global semiconductor equipment supplier into the Dholera project while also linking the fab’s development with efforts to build local capabilities across talent, supply chains and research.
