India’s data centre industry is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing digital infrastructure markets, with Mumbai reinforcing its position as the country’s largest data centre hub while Tier-II cities begin attracting significant investments, according to a recent industry report. The growth is being fuelled by rising cloud adoption, artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, digital public infrastructure and increasing demand for secure data storage.
The report highlights that Mumbai continues to dominate the domestic market owing to its robust fibre connectivity, reliable power infrastructure, concentration of financial institutions and proximity to submarine cable landing stations. These advantages have made the city the preferred destination for hyperscale operators, cloud service providers and colocation companies looking to expand their digital infrastructure footprint.
Beyond the established hubs, cities such as Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Noida are witnessing sustained capacity additions, while emerging locations including Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Kochi and Bhubaneswar are steadily gaining traction. Improved connectivity, supportive state policies, lower land costs and increasing enterprise demand are encouraging developers to diversify investments beyond metropolitan centres.
Industry experts believe the next phase of growth will be driven by AI-enabled computing, edge data centres, 5G deployment and rising digital consumption across sectors. As enterprises accelerate digital transformation and data localisation requirements continue to evolve, India is expected to strengthen its position as a strategic global destination for data centre investments, supporting the country’s ambitions of becoming a leading digital economy.
