Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy held discussions with leading electric two-wheeler manufacturers in Bengaluru on July 4 to explore measures aimed at strengthening indigenous manufacturing and developing a globally competitive electric mobility ecosystem in India.
The meeting brought together key industry leaders who outlined their progress in developing homegrown electric mobility platforms and technologies. The manufacturers highlighted their continued focus on indigenous engineering, product development, and domestic manufacturing capabilities, while reiterating their vision of establishing India as a major global hub for electric two-wheeler production.
Industry representatives also outlined the evolving requirements of the electric two-wheeler sector and stressed the importance of sustained policy support to further enhance domestic manufacturing. They shared recommendations on incentives considered essential for the industry’s growth and suggested measures that could help Indian manufacturers scale production and expand their footprint in both domestic and international markets.
During the discussions, manufacturers expressed support for extending the PM E-DRIVE Scheme and proposed revisions to the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Auto Scheme to better reflect the sector’s changing needs. The PM E-DRIVE Scheme continues to support the electric two-wheeler segment as part of the Government’s broader clean mobility agenda.
The delegation also explored opportunities to accelerate indigenous electric vehicle manufacturing, increase domestic value addition, and strengthen India’s electric vehicle export potential. Industry leaders sought the Minister’s guidance on creating an enabling ecosystem that would allow homegrown manufacturers to emerge as globally competitive enterprises.
Responding to the industry’s suggestions, Kumaraswamy assured stakeholders of the Ministry’s full support in strengthening India’s electric two-wheeler ecosystem. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to promoting domestic manufacturing, innovation, and exports while creating favourable conditions for Indian companies to compete on the global stage.
The Minister stated that the Government remains focused on building an environment that enables Indian manufacturers to innovate, grow, and expand internationally, contributing to the national visions of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.
Kumaraswamy also underscored Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s target of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070, emphasising that the transition to clean mobility and the expansion of indigenous electric vehicle manufacturing are critical to achieving this goal.
He further noted that strengthening India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities and fostering globally competitive enterprises will play a vital role in the country’s journey towards becoming a developed nation under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
The industry delegation included Tarun Mehta, Co-Founder and CEO of Ather Energy; Mohal Lalbhai, Founder and CEO of Matter; Aravind Mani, Co-Founder and CEO of River; Saurav Kumar, Founder and CEO of Euler Motors; and Dinesh Arjun, Co-Founder and CEO of Raptee HV.
