India currently has around 6,600 MW of nuclear power capacity under construction, reflecting the government’s continued focus on strengthening clean and reliable base-load power generation to meet the country’s rising electricity demand.
The ongoing projects are expected to be completed in phases by 2029–30, contributing significantly to the expansion of India’s nuclear energy portfolio. Nuclear power remains a key component of the country’s long-term energy strategy, supporting the transition toward a low-carbon and sustainable power sector.
In addition to the projects currently under construction, around 7,000 MW of nuclear capacity is at various stages of planning and approval, indicating further expansion in the coming years. These upcoming projects are expected to play an important role in strengthening India’s energy security while supporting the integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
India’s installed nuclear power capacity currently stands at over 8,700 MW, generated from multiple nuclear power stations operating across different states. The expansion of nuclear power is considered crucial for providing consistent electricity supply, particularly as renewable energy sources such as solar and wind continue to grow rapidly.
Alongside nuclear expansion, the government is also investing in hydropower and energy storage infrastructure to ensure grid stability and reliability. Several hydroelectric and pumped storage projects are currently under development, aimed at supporting the country’s evolving energy mix.
With growing electricity demand and ambitious climate targets, the expansion of nuclear capacity is expected to strengthen India’s clean energy portfolio while ensuring long-term energy security and stable power supply for industrial and economic growth.
