GE Vernova Coryton Power Plant modernization UK

GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE: GEV) has successfully completed a major outage and modernization project at InterGen’s 800-megawatt (MW) combined cycle Coryton Power Plant in the United Kingdom, delivering performance results that exceeded expectations. The project involved the installation of two High Efficiency (HE) upgrades at the plant, located around 30 miles east of London on the River Thames, resulting in higher efficiency and increased power output.

According to InterGen, the modernization delivered stronger-than-anticipated results. Daniel Fosberg, Managing Director at InterGen, said the HE upgrades achieved higher efficiency and power production than originally forecast. He noted that the project supports InterGen’s commitment to the energy transition by strengthening flexible generation to maintain grid stability as renewable energy penetration grows, while ensuring a reliable and affordable power supply for customers.

GE Vernova’s HE upgrade integrates technology advancements across gas turbine, compressor, and combustor systems. As a result, Coryton Power Plant achieved up to an additional 85 MW of output, surpassing the expected 77 MW, while improving unit efficiency by 2.46%. The upgrades are also designed to extend maintenance intervals. The modernization is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 67,500 tons of CO₂ equivalent annually, supporting government objectives to lower the national carbon footprint by requiring less fuel to generate the same amount of electricity.

The outage scope included borescope inspections of two generators and steam turbines, valve inspections, and comprehensive electrical testing of all components. GE Vernova deployed a global project team of more than 300 specialists across project management, engineering, sourcing, logistics, manufacturing, and One Field Services. Working closely with InterGen, the team completed over 122,000 man-hours of work while achieving zero recordable environmental, health, and safety incidents.

Joseph Anis, President & CEO of GE Vernova’s Gas Power business in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, said the project highlights the company’s commitment to keeping customer gas turbine fleets competitive in the UK’s evolving energy landscape. He added that GE Vernova’s GT26 gas turbines are capable of operating on a variety of fuels, including hydrogen and natural gas blends, providing future pathways for emissions reduction.

With the Coryton project, eleven GT26 units equipped with the HE upgrade were already in operation by 2025. GE Vernova introduced the GT26 HE upgrade in 2019 following significant investment in its development. The technology combines innovations from the company’s F- and H-Class fleets with additive manufacturing, advanced aerodynamics, material science, and combustion dynamics, delivering gains in efficiency, output, and maintenance interval extensions.

GE Vernova Inc. is a global energy company operating across Power, Wind, and Electrification segments, supported by accelerator businesses. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the company employs approximately 85,000 people across nearly 100 countries and focuses on electrification and decarbonization to support a more affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy future.
