NHPC to Begin Commercial Operation of 250 MW Unit at Subansiri Hydropower Project

NHPC Limited is set to commence commercial operations of a 250 MW generating unit at its Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, marking another important step in the phased commissioning of one of India’s largest hydropower projects.

The commercial operation date for this unit has been declared effective from February 1, 2026, starting at midnight. With this addition, the project continues its gradual integration into the national power grid, strengthening renewable energy supply from the northeastern region.

The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW, comprising eight units of 250 MW each. Located on the Subansiri River near the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, the project is designed as a run-of-river scheme aimed at delivering clean and reliable electricity while supporting regional development.

Earlier units of the project have already been brought into commercial operation, and further commissioning is planned in stages. Once fully completed, the Subansiri project is expected to play a key role in enhancing grid stability, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and supporting India’s long-term renewable energy goals.
