In a move to enhance electricity reliability and meet rising demand, Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) has commissioned a new 20 MVA, 66/11 kV power transformer at the 66 kV sub-station serving the city’s IT Park.
The new installation is expected to deliver significant relief to power-hungry zones including IT Park, Manimajra, Kishangarh and nearby localities — areas that previously faced supply shortages, especially during peak summer periods.
According to CPDL Director Arun Kumar Verma, the enhanced capacity will ensure more reliable, uninterrupted electricity supply and also serve as an alternate power source during emergencies. The additional capacity will ease the load on the existing Manimajra grid sub-station, thereby reducing stress on the existing infrastructure.
This marks the second 20 MVA transformer commissioned by CPDL since assuming responsibility for city power distribution. The first was installed at the Industrial Area Phase-II sub-station. Two more similar installations — at GSS Sector 56 and Industrial Area Phase-I — are also in the pipeline, aimed at further strengthening Chandigarh’s power distribution network.
The new transformer is expected to significantly improve power supply quality across residential, commercial, and IT sectors — reducing outages, load-shedding, and voltage fluctuations, especially during high-demand periods.
