The Government of India has released nearly Rs 37,000 crore under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), marking a major step toward improving the performance and financial health of the country’s power distribution network. The amount accounts for roughly 38 percent of the total sanctioned Gross Budgetary Support for the scheme.
RDSS, one of the Centre’s flagship programmes for the power sector, aims to deliver reliable, quality and uninterrupted electricity by supporting DISCOMs in reducing losses, modernising networks and adopting smart solutions.
According to the Ministry of Power, funds are released to Distribution Companies only after they meet predefined reform milestones. These include targets related to loss reduction, infrastructure upgrade, smart metering progress, and adherence to operational benchmarks. A detailed result-evaluation framework, tailored for each State and DISCOM, is being used to monitor progress and ensure accountability.
The government expects the scheme to accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies such as smart meters, automated systems, and upgraded distribution infrastructure, ultimately helping DISCOMs strengthen their financial stability while delivering improved services to consumers nationwide.
