Maharashtra becomes the first Indian state to join the Centre’s nuclear-based clean power initiative to advance energy security and low-carbon electricity.

Maharashtra has taken a pioneering step in India’s clean energy transition by becoming the first state to formally join the Central Government’s nuclear-based power generation initiative. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the development, calling it a major milestone in the state’s long-term strategy to strengthen energy security while reducing carbon emissions.

According to the state government, Maharashtra will collaborate with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and related central agencies to accelerate the establishment of new nuclear power infrastructure within the state. This includes exploring advanced reactor technologies, expanding existing nuclear facilities, and identifying suitable locations for future projects.

Fadnavis emphasized that nuclear energy will play a crucial role in meeting Maharashtra’s rising electricity demand in a sustainable manner. With industrialization, urban growth, and 24×7 power supply commitments increasing the state’s energy requirements, nuclear power is expected to provide a reliable, high-capacity, and clean alternative to fossil-based generation.

The initiative is also expected to boost local employment, promote high-technology skill development, and attract investment into allied sectors such as component manufacturing, engineering services, and research partnerships.

State officials noted that the collaboration will align with national goals of expanding India’s nuclear power capacity and achieving long-term climate commitments. Maharashtra’s early participation, they added, positions the state as a frontrunner in adopting next-generation clean power solutions.

Industry experts have welcomed the announcement, stating that coordinated state–centre efforts can significantly accelerate the rollout of nuclear power projects and support India’s broader energy transition roadmap.
