Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Reviews Major Hydroelectric Projects in Jammu & Kashmir

In a significant move to bolster India’s renewable energy infrastructure, Shri Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, commenced a high-level two-day visit to the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. The visit aims to fast track the progress of critical hydroelectric projects managed by NHPC, ensuring the optimal utilization of water resources and sustainable power generation.

Accompanied by Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), the Minister’s itinerary focuses on key projects across the Reasi, Ramban, and Kishtwar districts. The review underscores the Government’s priority to enhance the energy security of the region through large-scale hydro-power initiatives.

Accelerating Desilting at Salal Power Project On the first day of his visit, Minister Manohar Lal inspected the Salal Power Project in Reasi district. During the briefing by NHPC CMD Shri Bhupendra Gupta, the Minister issued strict directives to expedite sediment removal operations at the Salal reservoir. This desilting process is critical for maximizing water utilization and ensuring the operational efficiency of the station, which is located on the Chenab River.

Foundation Stone Laid at Ratle Hydroelectric Project Marking a major milestone, the Union Minister visited the Ratle Hydroelectric Project in Kishtwar, where he laid the foundation stone for the dam concreting works. He urged the project teams to maintain momentum and ensure the effective, time-bound completion of the facility. Additionally, the Minister conducted an aerial inspection of the massive 1856 MW Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project, emphasizing its strategic importance to the national grid.

Commitment to Sustainability and Coordination Highlighting the government’s focus on environmental conservation, Shri Manohar Lal participated in a plantation drive at the Salal Power Station premises. He further held deliberations with local administration and senior officials to streamline departmental coordination, ensuring that infrastructure development remains aligned with sustainable development goals.

The two-day visit serves as a catalyst for J&K’s transformation into a powerhouse of hydroelectric energy, promising a stable and clean energy future for the region and the country.
