Tata Power Company Limited has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from REC Power Development and Consultancy Ltd. (RECPDCL) for the acquisition of the Jejuri–Hinjewadi Power Transmission Limited project, marking a significant expansion of the company’s presence in India’s power transmission sector.
Under the agreement, Tata Power will take over the special purpose vehicle (SPV) responsible for executing a major transmission infrastructure scheme in Maharashtra, aimed at strengthening grid connectivity and addressing transmission constraints in the Pune region. The project envisions the construction of approximately 115 km of 400 kV double-circuit transmission lines between the Jejuri and Hinjewadi substations, along with upgrades to 400 kV GIS line bays at both ends.
The transmission system will be developed on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis. Following the formal SPV transfer, Tata Power is expected to operate the transmission assets for a period of 35 years, with a scheduled commercial operation date targeted within 24 months of the transfer.
The annual transmission charge associated with this project has been indicated at around ₹155.78 crore, reflecting the commercial framework under which the SPV will provide grid services once operational.
This acquisition aligns with Tata Power’s broader strategic focus on expanding its transmission portfolio and capitalising on opportunities arising from India’s growing energy infrastructure needs. The company has been steadily building capabilities across generation, transmission, distribution and renewables as part of its integrated power business model, which includes sizable investments in renewable energy capacity and grid strengthening initiatives.
Officials say the Jejuri–Hinjewadi project will play a key role in enhancing regional power flow, supporting industrial and commercial demand in Maharashtra’s urban and peri-urban centres, and contributing to overall grid reliability as demand grows.
The development also follows a wave of recent transmission wins for Tata Power, reinforcing its position as a major player in India’s electricity infrastructure space and broadening its long-term asset base amid rising energy consumption and modernisation efforts.
