Switch to Electric Power Saves Indian Railways ₹6,000 Crore, Says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Indian Railways has achieved savings of around ₹6,000 crore by transitioning from diesel to electric traction, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed in the Lok Sabha.

The savings stem from the Railways’ massive electrification drive, which has significantly reduced dependence on diesel, one of the largest cost components in operations. Energy remains the second-highest expenditure for the transporter after staff costs, making this shift financially significant.

In recent years, Indian Railways has accelerated electrification across its network, enabling more efficient, faster, and cost-effective train operations.

Beyond financial gains, the move is also contributing to lower carbon emissions, reduced fuel imports, and improved sustainability, aligning with India’s broader clean energy and climate goals.

The government continues to push for complete electrification, positioning Indian Railways as a greener and more energy-efficient transportation backbone for the country.
