In a major boost to India’s renewable energy roadmap, the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) has partnered with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to develop a 1200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Nandyal and a 50 MW hybrid solar project. The collaboration was formalized with the exchange of Government Orders during the Energy Session of the Andhra Pradesh Partnership Summit 2025 held in Visakhapatnam.
The summit was organised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Government of Andhra Pradesh, in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Senior officials from the state and SECI were present during the exchange, including Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Shri Gottipati Ravi Kumar, Chief Secretary Shri K. Vijayanand, and NREDCAP Vice Chairman M. Kamalakara Babu. The GOs were handed over to SECI officials Shri Sivakumar Venkat Vepakomma and Shri Rohit Choubey.
As per the Ministry of Power’s directives issued in January 2025, SECI has been designated as the implementing agency for the 1200 MWh BESS under market-based operations. The project, approved by the SECI Board in October 2025, will be executed under the CAPEX mode, with SECI making the full investment. The hybrid solar project will also follow the CAPEX model.
The combined developments are expected to significantly enhance Andhra Pradesh’s renewable energy infrastructure. The BESS is designed to strengthen grid stability, improve energy storage capacity, and support integration of intermittent renewable sources, while the hybrid solar project will contribute to reliable and cleaner power generation.
Officials noted that these initiatives mark an important step toward building a resilient green energy ecosystem and supporting India’s long-term net-zero ambitions.
