SCI Signs Contract with Mazagon Dock for Methanol-Powered Supply Vessel in Green Shipping Push

Shipping Corporation of India has signed a shipbuilding contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd for the construction of a methanol-powered platform supply vessel (PSV), marking a significant step toward sustainable maritime operations.

The agreement, executed on March 18, 2026, involves the development of a 3,000 DWT methanol dual-fuel vessel, which will be the first in SCI’s fleet to operate on green methanol.

This initiative signals a strategic shift toward cleaner alternative fuels in shipping, with methanol emerging as a viable option to reduce emissions without requiring major infrastructure overhaul.
The vessel will play a crucial role in offshore operations, transporting supplies, equipment, and personnel to oil and gas installations, while incorporating next-generation dual-fuel technology for improved environmental performance.

Valued at approximately $39 million (~₹320 crore), the project reflects India’s growing focus on green shipping and decarbonization, aligning with broader initiatives such as the transition to low-emission fuels in the maritime sector.

This collaboration between SCI and Mazagon Dock underscores a larger industry transition toward sustainable marine fuel solutions, positioning India’s shipping sector for a cleaner and more resilient future.
