Rajasthan renewable energy expansion with large-scale 6,000 MWh battery storage system supporting solar power integration

The Energy Department is prioritizing the deployment of large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to address the challenges of integrating substantial amounts of solar power into the grid.

The Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation has positioned energy storage as a cornerstone of its next phase of power sector expansion. To this end, it has already issued a tender for 6,000 MWh of standalone BESS, marking one of the largest such tenders ever released by a state utility.

Officials say the procurement represents a strategic shift from simply increasing renewable megawatt capacity to ensuring that power is dispatchable, reliable, and consistently available.

Rohit Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation, stated, “A significant new initiative is underway at the Pugal Solar Park in Bikaner, where a 2,450 MW solar project will be integrated with 5,000 MWh of battery storage. This ambitious project is being developed by Rajasthan Solar Park Development Company Ltd, a subsidiary of the state’s renewable energy corporation.”

Gupta said that the integrated generation-storage facility is designed to stabilize fluctuations in solar energy output and reduce reliance on thermal power plants. “Although Rajasthan has experienced rapid growth in renewable energy generation, challenges such as peak-time shortages and frequency deviations continue to be a concern.”
