Power Consumption in India Up 18.6% to 13,299 Billion Units in February as Warm Weather Reduces Heating Demand

India’s overall power consumption rose 18.6% year-on-year to 13,299 billion units in February, driven in part by warmer weather that reduced demand for heating and supported higher usage in cooling and industrial sectors.

The electricity demand growth in February continued an upward trend seen in recent months, reflecting broader economic activity and seasonal shifts in energy usage patterns. Warmer temperatures across many regions of the country lessened the need for heating loads, leading to greater reliance on power for other uses such as commercial cooling, industrial operations and residential consumption.

Month-on-month comparisons also showed healthy growth in electricity demand, indicating improving energy utilisation across sectors. Several states reported robust increases in consumption, underscoring the correlation between rising economic activity and electricity demand.

The increase in power use was observed across various consumer categories, including industrial, commercial and residential segments. Analysts noted that demand from the industrial sector remained significant, while residential air-conditioning load also contributed to higher daily peak demand during warmer spells.

Grid operators said the power system managed the increased load smoothly, with generation and transmission dynamics remaining stable despite higher draws from the electricity network. Improved grid infrastructure, ongoing capacity additions and enhanced demand forecasting supported reliable supply throughout the month.

The rise in power consumption is seen as a positive indicator of economic momentum, though analysts acknowledged that weather patterns continue to influence short-term demand shifts. They added that as seasonal conditions evolve, electricity demand may adjust accordingly, but the overall trend points to resilient energy usage driven by stronger demand in both commercial and industrial segments.
