Patel Engineering signs MoU with Arunachal Pradesh government to revive 144 MW Gongri Hydropower Project in West Kameng district

Patel Engineering Ltd has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh to restore and develop the 144 megawatt Gongri Hydropower Project in the West Kameng district of the northeastern state. The agreement marks the first hydropower initiative revived under the state’s newly introduced policy for resuscitating terminated energy projects.

The Gongri project, situated near Dirang town on the Gongri River, a tributary of the Bichom River in the Kameng basin was previously abandoned. Under the MoU, Patel Engineering will oversee the entire project lifecycle, including preparing and validating the detailed project report (DPR), engineering and design work, procurement of electromechanical equipment, and civil construction of the dam and powerhouse. The scope also covers installation and commissioning of turbines and generators, and the development of associated transmission infrastructure to connect to the grid.

Estimated at around ₹1,700 crore, the project is expected to take roughly four years to complete. It will be developed on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis, under which Patel Engineering will operate the facility for a 40-year lease period before transferring ownership and management to the state government.

Arunachal Pradesh’s “Decade of Hydropower” vision underpins the revival, aiming to position hydropower as a major economic driver for the region by harnessing its abundant renewable energy potential. Once operational, the Gongri Hydropower Project is expected to boost clean energy generation, improve regional power availability, and contribute to local employment and infrastructure development.

Kavita Shirvaikar, Managing Director of Patel Engineering, said the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable development and leveraging hydro resources responsibly for socio-economic benefits.
