Rooftop solar panels installed under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana providing zero electricity bills to Indian households

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has delivered zero electricity bills to more than 7.7 lakh households across India, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday. This significant milestone highlights the rapid uptake of rooftop solar systems under the flagship residential solar programme.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik stated that as of 9 December 2025, a total of 19,45,758 rooftop solar installations have been commissioned nationwide. These installations collectively benefit 24,35,196 households, with a substantial portion now receiving electricity at zero cost due to their own solar generation.

Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar scheme aims to accelerate the adoption of clean, renewable energy by facilitating rooftop solar systems for residential consumers. The programme’s ambitious target is to achieve solar installations in one crore households by fiscal 2026–27, backed by a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore.

Under the initiative, participating households receive financial support and subsidies to install rooftop solar panels. Once operational, these systems can generate sufficient solar power to offset or eliminate monthly electricity costs, enabling beneficiaries to enjoy zero electricity bills through self-generation and grid-tied net metering arrangements.

The scheme is designed not only as a tool for cost savings but also to contribute to India’s broader clean energy transition, reduce dependence on conventional power, and support climate and sustainability goals. States such as Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Haryana have reported strong participation, with thousands of households transitioning to rooftop solar power under the programme.

With ongoing installations and rising awareness among homeowners, the PM Surya Ghar Yojana continues to be a key driver in expanding distributed solar generation and making renewable energy accessible to millions of Indian families.
