State-run power giant NTPC Ltd has announced a major expansion into coal gasification, outlining plans to develop multiple large-scale projects aimed at producing 10 million tonnes of synthetic gas per year. The move is part of NTPC’s broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio, promote cleaner coal technologies, and reduce dependence on conventional coal-based power generation.
According to the company, the upcoming coal gasification units will utilize advanced technologies to convert coal into cleaner synthetic gas, which can be used for various industrial applications including chemicals, fertilizers, and clean fuels. These projects are expected to significantly reduce emissions compared to traditional coal combustion, supporting India’s push for low-carbon industrial growth.
NTPC has highlighted that coal gasification offers a pathway to value-added products and helps reduce imports of key chemicals and fuels. The planned facilities will also create new employment opportunities and support local industrial ecosystems.
The company is currently identifying suitable locations for the plants and exploring partnerships with technology providers and industry players to ensure efficient execution. Detailed implementation timelines are expected to be finalized in the upcoming phases.
This initiative marks a notable step in NTPC’s transition toward cleaner technologies, strengthening India’s long-term vision for sustainable and self-reliant energy production.
