India identifies 224 GW green energy storage potential to support renewable expansion and grid stability.

The Ministry of Power has identified a 224 GW national potential for green energy storage, marking a significant step toward building the infrastructure needed to support India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy ecosystem. The assessment highlights the scale of storage capacity required to balance the nation’s future power grid as solar and wind generation continue to rise.

According to the Ministry, the identified potential spans multiple storage technologies, including pumped hydro storage, battery storage systems, and emerging long-duration storage solutions. The findings underline India’s need for flexible resources that can stabilise the grid, integrate higher shares of renewables, and provide round-the-clock clean power for both industrial and household demand.

The mapping exercise comes at a time when India is accelerating its clean energy transition, with ambitious targets to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and move toward net-zero emissions by 2070. Large-scale storage will be central to achieving these milestones, enabling renewable energy to serve as a reliable base-load option.

Officials noted that India has already begun fast-tracking pumped storage projects across several states while simultaneously incentivising advanced battery manufacturing through schemes such as the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI). The newly identified potential offers a roadmap for future investments and project development in the green storage sector.

The Ministry’s announcement signals growing momentum in India’s pursuit of a modern, flexible, and resilient power system, one capable of supporting high renewable penetration and ensuring 24×7 clean energy availability for the country’s growing economy.
