Indian infrastructure giant Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) has won a significant contract for the electrification of the Mumbai Metro’s Line 4 corridor from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), strengthening its role in expanding the city’s urban rail network.
Under the agreement, L&T’s Transportation Infrastructure business will be responsible for the design, supply, installation, integration, testing and commissioning of the power supply and traction systems for approximately 24.72 km of metro track between Bhakti Park (Wadala) and Cadbury Junction.
The scope also includes the establishment of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system covering 32 stations, depots and a receiving substation, and encompasses electrical and mechanical works, including lifts, escalators and comprehensive maintenance for an initial period, to be carried out by L&T’s in-house teams.
L&T classifies this order as “significant,” indicating a contract value ranging between ₹1,000 crore and ₹2,500 crore under its internal project categorisation.
This contract marks L&T’s third consecutive award for work on the Line 4 & 4A metro corridor, highlighting the company’s continuing partnership with MMRDA in building critical systems for the Mumbai Metro network. Previous packages involved systems such as rolling stock, communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling and ballast-less track-works.
Mumbai Metro Line 4 and Line 4A form a vital segment of the expanding rapid transit system aimed at improving connectivity across the city’s eastern and central suburbs, reducing travel times and easing traffic congestion.
