KP Group and Botswana Government representatives signing MoU for large-scale renewable energy generation, storage and power transmission projects in Botswana

India’s KP Group has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of the Republic of Botswana to jointly pursue large-scale renewable energy generation, storage, and transmission infrastructure initiatives aimed at significantly enhancing the southern African nation’s clean power capacity.

Signed between Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy and representatives of KP Group which includes KPI Green Energy Limited, KP Energy Limited, and KP Green Engineering Limited, the agreement establishes a framework for planning, developing and implementing renewable energy assets and associated transmission networks across the country.

Under the terms of the MoU, the collaboration envisages a capital investment of around USD 4 billion (approximately ₹36,000 crore) to scale Botswana’s renewable energy capacity to nearly 5 gigawatts (GW). The projects will span utility-scale power generation, energy storage systems, and the upgrading and construction of high-voltage transmission lines.

Officials highlight that strengthening grid infrastructure and regional interconnections is expected to improve Botswana’s energy security and support cross-border electricity trade within Southern Africa.

As part of the partnership, KP Group will oversee key development activities including feasibility studies, project design, financing, construction, commissioning, and long-term operations and maintenance of the renewable energy and storage assets.

In a move to boost local skills and capacity, the agreement also includes support for 30 annual scholarships for Botswana citizens in disciplines such as renewable energy, engineering, sustainability, and related fields, fostering knowledge transfer and workforce development.

The MoU is viewed as a strategic step in both nations’ clean energy agendas, aligning with Botswana’s ambition to strengthen its renewable footprint and KP Group’s international expansion in utility-scale energy markets.
