JSW Thermal Energy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of JSW Energy Limited, has signed a supply contract with its associate company, Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Limited, for two steam turbine generators of 800 MW each. The equipment will be used for the 1,600 MW Salboni thermal power project in West Bengal.
The turbine generators will be manufactured and supplied as per the project’s construction schedule. By sourcing key equipment from an associate company, JSW Energy aims to improve supply-chain certainty, strengthen coordination during execution, and reduce risks linked to industry-wide equipment shortages.
With the Salboni project under construction, JSW Energy’s total thermal capacity is expected to rise to 9,058 MW. This includes its existing operational thermal capacity of 5,658 MW and the 1,600 MW Salboni project, along with an option to add 1,800 MW at the KSK Mahanadi plant. Thermal power would then account for around 30% of the company’s total locked-in capacity of 30.5 GW.
Commenting on the development, Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, said the contract is a strategic step to ensure execution certainty for the Salboni project. He highlighted the long-standing partnership with Toshiba JSW, which began in 2008, and said the project will support India’s energy security by adding reliable base-load capacity alongside the country’s growing renewable energy footprint.
JSW Energy currently has a locked-in generation capacity of 30.5 GW, comprising 13.3 GW operational, 12.4 GW under construction across thermal and renewable projects, 150 MW under acquisition in hydro, and a pipeline of 4.6 GW. The company also has 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity through pumped storage and battery energy storage systems. JSW Energy plans to achieve 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by FY 2030, with a target of carbon neutrality by 2050.
