JSW Energy is set to establish its first nuclear power plant by 2030

JSW Energy is set to establish its first nuclear power plant by 2030, exploring both large reactors and small modular reactor (SMR) technologies. The company plans to first construct a pilot plant to assess operational dynamics before scaling up. Site selection is currently underway.

Goa-based JSW Energy, led by Sajjan Jindal, is evaluating large reactor options, including 700-megawatt pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) and 1,000-megawatt configurations, according to Neeraj Agarwal, President of Nuclear Energy at JSW Energy, speaking at India Energy Week in Goa.

“A final decision on technology and plant configuration will be taken only after JSW Energy is assured of timely execution and cost control,” Agarwal said. He added that once land acquisition and technology selection are completed, the company will move to construction, with timelines remaining a key concern.

JSW Energy estimates nuclear project costs at around ₹16–20 crore per megawatt, depending on technology and scale, which will determine the overall investment required. While multiple configurations are under consideration, the company intends to first build a pilot plant to gain operational experience before full-scale implementation.
