Retail electric vehicle (EV) sales in India surged 16.37% year-on-year in calendar 2025, reaching 2,270,107 units, driven by robust growth across passenger cars, two-wheelers and three-wheelers, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
The passenger electric vehicle segment posted a 77.04% increase, with sales rising to 176,817 units from 99,975 units in 2024, pushing EV penetration in the passenger car market to approximately 4% from 2.4%
Electric two-wheeler retail sales climbed 11.36% to 1,279,951 units, while electric three-wheelers grew 15.39% to 797,733 units, with EVs now accounting for nearly 61% of total three-wheeler sales — underscoring strong adoption in last-mile mobility segments.
Though from a smaller base, electric commercial vehicle sales jumped 54.2% to 15,606 units, reflecting early momentum in the freight and services segments.
FADA President C.S. Vigneshwar said the year’s results signify a shift from pilot projects to broader EV adoption across key vehicle categories. He noted that improved product availability and lower total cost of ownership are key factors behind the uptick. Sustained growth, he added, will hinge on enhancements in charging infrastructure, consistent policy support and expanded retail financing to make EVs more mainstream nationwide.
