In a major boost to India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem, the government has approved seven new projects worth Rs 5,532 crore to set up facilities for producing essential electronic components and materials. The announcement was made by Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on 27 October, marking the rollout of the first batch of approvals under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS).
These upcoming projects are expected to enable production worth Rs 36,559 crore and create more than 5,100 direct employment opportunities. The facilities will be located across Tamil Nadu (five units), Andhra Pradesh (one unit), and Madhya Pradesh (one unit) promoting regional industrial diversification beyond the country’s traditional manufacturing centers.
According to the ministry, the ECMS has received an exceptional response, drawing 249 proposals with a combined investment potential of Rs 1.15 lakh crore and an estimated production value of Rs 10.34 lakh crore. The approved projects will play a crucial role in meeting domestic demand for key components like High-Density Interconnect (HDI) and Multi-Layer Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), Camera Modules, Copper Clad Laminates, and Polypropylene Films, which are integral to products ranging from smartphones and EVs to medical and defence equipment.
Vaishnaw highlighted that the new manufacturing units will significantly reduce India’s reliance on imported components. Around 20 per cent of the country’s PCB demand and 15 per cent of Camera Module sub-assembly needs will now be fulfilled domestically. He further noted that India will achieve complete self-sufficiency in Copper Clad Laminate production, with nearly 60 per cent of output targeted for exports.
Officials stated that the initiative represents a turning point for India’s entry into advanced component and materials manufacturing, strengthening the supply chain and supporting the country’s broader vision of electronics self-reliance. The ECMS, along with the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and the India Semiconductor Mission, aims to build a complete electronics value chain from raw materials to finished products positioning India as a reliable global hub for electronics manufacturing.
