India Achieves 1 Billion Tonne Coal Production for Second Consecutive Year, Strengthening Energy Security

India has successfully achieved 1 billion tonne (BT) coal production on March 20, 2026, marking the second consecutive year the country has crossed the milestone, according to the Ministry of Coal. The achievement highlights India’s continued progress toward energy self-reliance and its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply to critical sectors of the economy.

The Ministry stated that the milestone was made possible through sustained and coordinated efforts across the coal sector, along with the active contribution of all stakeholders. The higher production level has helped the country meet rising energy demand while supporting the power sector in maintaining record-high coal stock levels at coal-based thermal power plants.

Officials noted that the achievement reflects strong planning, efficient execution, and improved coordination across the coal value chain. The consistent rise in domestic coal output has played a key role in strengthening energy security and supporting industrial growth, while reducing dependence on imports.

The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to maintaining a stable, transparent, and performance-driven coal ecosystem. It said proactive policy measures, close monitoring of production targets, and continuous engagement with stakeholders are helping ensure reliable coal availability and smooth operations across the sector.

The Ministry added that the milestone aligns with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, aimed at building a resilient energy framework, enhancing domestic production capacity, and supporting sustainable economic development.
